Real teachers matter.
AI can explain a word and an app can remind you to practise. They can be useful, but they are not a complete language-learning experience.
About Nihongo One
AI can help you study.
A teacher helps you learn.

Our belief
Nihongo One began with a simple belief: we still believe the best way to learn a language is with another person.
Apps, AI and self-study tools make it easier to study whenever you have time. You can review vocabulary on the train, do homework at lunch or practise at home. We use those tools too.
But they do not do everything a teacher can do.
A good teacher notices when you are confused, hears small pronunciation mistakes and knows when to explain something differently or give you more time to try.
That is why every live lesson at Nihongo One is taught by a real teacher.
Technology helps with practice and organisation.
It does not replace the teacher.
How we prepared the school
We spent more than three years preparing Nihongo One before opening the courses.
During that time, we reviewed learning materials, planned the courses and worked on the systems students and teachers would use online.
We kept coming back to practical questions:
We still use those questions when we review the school today.
We do not think more videos, quizzes or technology automatically make a course better.
We only add something if it has a clear reason to be there.
Experience
Nihongo One is operated by Lingua One Corporation, led by Representative Director Kanako Morita.
Kanako is a qualified Japanese-language teacher and has spent approximately 30 years working with international students, language education and study abroad.
Over the course of that career, she has assisted more than 10,000 students in their language-learning and international education journeys.
We bring that experience into Nihongo One.
That experience includes working with students from different countries, ages, cultures and educational backgrounds, and with very different reasons for learning a language.
Japanese learners are not all the same,
so one teaching style will not suit everyone.
Our teachers
We are not trying to become a huge teacher marketplace.
We do not hire teachers just so we can show a bigger number on the website.
Our teachers are native Japanese speakers who are trained to teach, and we select them carefully through our recruitment and assessment process.
Speaking Japanese well is not the same as knowing how to teach it.
That is what we look for when we hire teachers.
We would rather work with a smaller team we trust than grow the teaching roster just for the sake of being bigger.
Nihongo One uses technology, but the live lessons are still centred on the teacher and student.
The platform keeps lessons, practice, homework and learning records in one place.
Depending on the course, students can use the platform for:
The platform is there to reduce admin, not to get between the student and teacher.
Students can see what they have studied, what comes next and what still needs work. Teachers can see the same progress.
Between lessons
A live lesson may last an hour.
But learning Japanese takes more than that hour.
So students also have work they can do between live lessons.
You can review, practise and complete assignments when it suits your schedule.
That means live lesson time can be used for the things a teacher is best at: listening, explaining, correcting and helping you speak.
We think that balance works well.
Learn with a teacher. Practise between lessons.
Materials
We do not choose materials just because they are popular.
We choose them based on the course, the learner and what needs to be taught.
Where existing materials work well, we use them.
If something needs a different explanation or more practice, we add our own material.
Lingua One Corporation is also developing language-learning apps and other digital study tools.
Those tools are not meant to replace teachers.
They are meant to make good teaching easier to use and easier to continue outside class.
For organisations
Nihongo One also works with companies and organisations.
We provide Japanese-language training for companies and organisations.
Instead of putting every organisation into the same course, we can plan training based on:
Training can include attendance records, assignments, progress reports and completion documents where needed.
For company training, the first question should not be:
“Which course would you like to buy?”
It should be:
“What do your people need to be able to do in Japanese?”
We design from there. Training for organisations →
AI can explain a word and an app can remind you to practise. They can be useful, but they are not a complete language-learning experience.
Students need time to speak, ask questions and get attention from the teacher. That is harder in a large class.
A 200-day streak is nice, but being able to have a conversation you could not have six months ago matters more.
Japanese is more than vocabulary and grammar. How you say something, when you say it and what you leave unsaid can matter just as much.
We use technology when it makes learning easier or more flexible, not just because a feature is new.
Still learning
We do not think a school ever reaches a point where there is nothing left to improve.
We will keep reviewing our courses, materials and technology as the school grows.
Some things are less likely to change.
That is the school we want Nihongo One to be.
